Coastal Flood Risk: An Intriguing Story of Beaches, Backshores and Bulldozers
The pressures of urbanization and climate change will dramatically increase coastal flood risk. Traditionally, beach and backshore dune systems have provided critical protection against high water levels and energetic waves. However, Southern California backshores have been fundamentally altered to facilitate transportation, housing and recreational opportunities. Sea level rise will raise beach groundwater levels and propagate wave energy landward, promoting coastal erosion and in turn, jeopardizing infrastructure and necessitating flood mitigation measures. Join Professor Gallien and learn about the complex set of processes in coastal zones where land meets water and how previous measures have significant, and at times, unintended flood risk implications.

RSVP is by invitation only.
