Reel Justice: The Courtroom Goes to the Movies

Law-related films and TV shows reflect and influence popular beliefs about law, lawyers and the legal system. Illustrating his presentation with entertaining film clips, UCLA Professor of Law Emeritus Paul Bergman will cover such topics as: – The amazing story behind Abraham Lincoln’s most famous murder trial.

  • The real lawyer who was the basis for defense lawyer Billy Flynn in the film Chicago, which won the Oscar for Best Film in 2003.
  • The censorship of films in the first half of the 20th century.
  • The LA lawyer who was one of the most theatrical trial lawyers who ever lived.

The clips will be chosen from films that Professor Bergman writes about in his popular book, Reel Justice: The Courtroom Goes to the Movies. Professor Bergman will be happy to autograph a book should anyone wish to purchase one.
