South Bay Chancellor’s Society Event

Kerri L. Johnson, Ph.D.

Professor Departments of Communication and Psychology
Chair, Department of Communication

Judging by First Impressions

As children, we were admonished, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” And yet, research shows — time and time again — that we can and do. This talk will showcase how women’s appearance impacts judgments and outcomes ranging from dating to the success of politicians. Dr. Johnson will explain how research has discovered these unconscious and conscious biases through a variety of examples, such as highly feminine female politicians receiving more campaign contributions in spite of the fact that they are judged to be low in competence. Get ready for an exciting evening exploring a timely, rigorous, and scholarly perspective on how and why the success of women, in both their personal and professional lives, is fundamentally altered by their appearance — and what we can do about it.

RSVP for this event is by invitation only.
