DESCRIPTION:Host Charles Steinmetz MBA ’77\, along with South Bay Chancellor’s Society and fellow UCLA alumni\, parents\, and friends will gather for an exclusive reception and presentation featuring special guest: \nJennifer Jay\, Ph.D\nProfessor\, Civil and Environmental Engineering \nEnvironmental Antibiotic Resistance in California: From Cattle Farms to Surfers\nRising levels of antibiotic resistance pose a serious global health concern\, and the role of the environment in spreading antibiotic resistance is currently not well understood. Join us as we take an exclusive first-look at Professor Jennifer Jay’s research uncovering the impact of ocean-dwelling antibiotic resistant pathogens on the nasal microbiome of surfers at Venice Beach and El Porto. Professor Jay will also share how a UCLA class covering food and the environment changed the dietary habits of students and demonstrated the importance of modest\, voluntary diet changes in mitigating climate change. \nRSVP is by invitation only. \n

Johnson\, Ph.D. \nProfessor Departments of Communication and Psychology\nChair\, Department of Communication \nJudging by First Impressions \nAs children\, we were admonished\, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” And yet\, research shows — time and time again — that we can and do. This talk will showcase how women’s appearance impacts judgments and outcomes ranging from dating to the success of politicians. Dr. Johnson will explain how research has discovered these unconscious and conscious biases through a variety of examples\, such as highly feminine female politicians receiving more campaign contributions in spite of the fact that they are judged to be low in competence. Get ready for an exciting evening exploring a timely\, rigorous\, and scholarly perspective on how and why the success of women\, in both their personal and professional lives\, is fundamentally altered by their appearance — and what we can do about it. \nRSVP for this event is by invitation only.

DESCRIPTION:The Evolution of Cars\nEver since Henry Ford’s Model T revolutionized how the world thought about mass transit\, America has been captivated by automobiles. Hear from one of the lead authors on a recent study done by a UCLA-led team of researchers\, which took a unique approach to explain the way in which technologies evolve in modern society. Borrowing a technique that biologists might use to study the evolution of plants or animals\, the scientists plotted the “births” and “deaths” of every American-made car and truck model from 1896 to 2014. \nAbout Erik Gjesfjeld\nErik Gjesfjeld is a post-doctoral Fellow at the Institute of Society and Genetics at UCLA.  He earned is PhD from the University of Washington in 2014.  Dr. Gjesfjeld received master’s degrees in Theoretical Archaeology and Field and Analytical Techniques in Archaeology\, with distinction\, at the Institute of Archaeology\, University College London.
