SUMMARY:UCLA Chancellor's Society Northern California Salon
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Northern California UCLA Chancellor’s Society. Join fellow UCLA alumni\, parents and friends at an exclusive brunch reception and conversation. \nJennifer Jay \nProfessor\, Civil and Environmental Engineering\nInstitute of the Environment and Sustainability \nSTAND UP FOR THE EARTH WHILE YOU SIT DOWN TO BRUNCH \nHave you ever considered the connections between our food\, climate change\, and antibiotic resistance in the environment? Globally\, food systems–what we eat\, where and how we grow it– play a major role in determining our impact on the environment. By considering our food choices\, we can find “low hanging fruit” for reducing our “foodprint.” In fact\, diet shifts hold great potential for helping us mitigate climate change! In addition\, food system changes can help us address a suite of environmental challenges including biodiversity loss\, nutrient pollution\, and land use change. In this talk we will discuss the complex relationship between food and the environment. We will focus on research regarding the transport of antibiotic resistant bacteria through watersheds in California to the coastal ocean and even to the microbiome of surfers. We will also investigate how knowledge of the carbon footprint of foods can lead to healthier and more sustainable food choices. \nSUNDAY\, MARCH 12\, 2023\n10:30 a.m. – Reception\n11:15 a.m. – Presentation \nST. DESCRIPTION:Please join the UCLA Chancellor’s Society and fellow alumni\, parents\, and friends for a virtual presentation featuring: \nLynn Vavreck\nMarvin Hoffenberg Professor of American Politics \nThe Bitter End: Why American Politics Feels So Stuck and Whether it Will Change\nDoes it feel like everything is stuck? Democrats and Republicans seem to disagree about everything. No one in Washington wants to cooperate with the other side. Elections seem closer than ever\, outcomes seem to turn on a coin flip\, and each side thinks its candidate won. How did we get here – and will it ever end? In this lecture\, we’ll explore the long-term trends and short-term shocks that have shaped this political moment\, while also entertaining possibilities about what could turn this bitter end into a new beginning. \nRSVP is by invitation only.

SUMMARY:San Fernando Valley Chancellor's Society Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Chancellor’s Society in partnership with the San Fernando Valley Regional Chancellor’s Society committee invite you to an exclusive presentation featuring special guest: \nJared Diamond\nProfessor\, Geography | UCLA\nPulitzer Prize Winning Author \nNational Crisis Viewed in the Light of Personal Crisis\nNations experience crises\, whose solution requires adopting selective changes\, and which some nations are more successful at solving than are other nations. We as individuals also experience personal crises\, either associated with certain ages or else triggered by major life events. The solution of a personal crisis also requires adopting selective changes\, which some are more successful at accomplishing than others. While using examples from his book Upheaval: How Nations Cope with Crisis and Change\, Jared Diamond will examine the extent to which similar considerations help understand the outcomes of recent and impending national crises\, and the impending world crisis. \nRSVP is by invitation only.

SUMMARY:Northern California Chancellor's Society Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Chancellor’s Society in partnership with the Northern California Regional Chancellor’s Society committee invite you to an exclusive presentation featuring Andrea Ghez\, 2020 Nobel Prize Winner and Professor of Physics & Astronomy. \nFrom the Possibility to the Certainty of a Supermassive Black Hole\n \nThrough the capture and analysis of twenty years of high-resolution imaging\, the UCLA Galactic Center Group has moved the case for a supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy from a possibility to a certainty. This was made possible with the first measurements of stellar orbits around a galactic nucleus. Further advances in state-of-the-art of high-resolution imaging technology on the world’s largest telescopes have greatly expanded the power of using stellar orbits to study black holes. This work is providing insight into how black holes grow and the role that they play in regulating the growth of their host galaxies. New measurements of stellar orbits at the Galactic Center hold the promise of improving our understanding of gravity through the tests of Einstein Theory of General Relativity in an unexplored regime. \nRSVP is by invitation only.

SUMMARY:Orange County Chancellor's Society Salon
DESCRIPTION:The Orange County Chancellor’s Cabinet is a regional group of UCLA’s most important supporters.  Please join with fellow alumni and friends for an exclusive reception and presentation featuring special guest: \nTimu Gallien\nAssistant Professor\, Civil and Environmental Engineering\nUCLA Samueli School of Engineering \nCoastal Flood Risk: An Intriguing Story of Beaches\, Backshores and Bulldozers \nThe pressures of urbanization and climate change will dramatically increase coastal flood risk. Traditionally\, beach and backshore dune systems have provided critical protection against high water levels and energetic waves. However\, Southern California backshores have been fundamentally altered to facilitate transportation\, housing and recreational opportunities. Sea level rise will raise beach groundwater levels and propagate wave energy landward\, promoting coastal erosion and in turn\, jeopardizing infrastructure and necessitating flood mitigation measures. Join Professor Gallien and learn about the complex set of processes in coastal zones where land meets water and how previous measures have significant\, and at times\, unintended flood risk implications. \nRSVP is by invitation only.

Smith\nProfessor\, Department of Anthropology &\nInstitute of the Environment and Sustainability\nNavin and Pratima Doshi Chair in Indian Studies \nBuild Tall or Add Sprawl? An Age-Old Urban Dilemma\nIn Los Angeles\, we’re confronted with sprawl\, traffic\, and miles of roadways that connect our city. Yet an archaeological perspective on urbanism shows that even in the first cities 6\,000 years ago there were the beginnings of a tug-of-war between vertical and horizontal visions of urbanism. Ancient cities almost all have some forms of monumental architecture that concentrates people and events in built-up centers\, and they almost all have some forms of sprawl and spread that are equivalent to our modern suburbs. What can we learn from the configuration of ancient and modern cities that can help us work towards better urban centers in the future? \nRSVP is by invitation only.
