Today’s youth are rapidly reimagining what it means to be civically engaged. They have led movements from Black Lives Matter to March for our Lives to Fridays for Future\, and they create change in big and small ways to improve society and advance equity and justice. Yet\, young people do not become changemakers overnight. Professor Wray-Lake will highlight how families\, schools\, and communities support young people’s development into changemakers and how\, knowingly and unknowingly\, adults create major barriers to youth civic engagement. It is time to consider youth as leaders and how we can follow or get out of the way.

Globally\, food systems–what we eat\, where and how we grow it– play a major role in determining our impact on the environment. By considering our food choices\, we can find “low hanging fruit” for reducing our “foodprint.” In fact\, diet shifts hold great potential for helping us mitigate climate change! In addition\, food system changes can help us address a suite of environmental challenges including biodiversity loss\, nutrient pollution\, and land use change. In this talk we will discuss the complex relationship between food and the environment. We will focus on research regarding the transport of antibiotic resistant bacteria through watersheds in California to the coastal ocean and even to the microbiome of surfers. DESCRIPTION:Please join the UCLA Chancellor’s Society and fellow alumni\, parents\, and friends for a special reception and program. \nUCLA State of the Campus \nChancellor Gene Block \nand a presentation from \nUCLA Health Operation Mend:\nHealing the Visible and Invisible Wounds of War\nJoin us for this inspiring evening as we hear from the UCLA Health Operation Mend team along with veterans and caregivers who have experienced this life-changing program at UCLA. Since 2007\, Operation Mend has been providing advanced surgical and medical care for post-9/11-era warriors injured during combat operations or while training for service. Since 2016\, Operation Mend has provided life-saving intensive treatment and support for the invisible wounds of war\, including post-traumatic stress disorder\, traumatic brain injury and co-occurring anxiety\, depression and family relationship challenges. The program\, including treatment\, travel and lodging\, is provided at no cost to veterans and their family members. \nRSVP is by invitation only.

DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Chancellor’s Society in partnership with the Northern California Regional Chancellor’s Society committee invite you to an exclusive presentation featuring Andrea Ghez\, 2020 Nobel Prize Winner and Professor of Physics & Astronomy. \nFrom the Possibility to the Certainty of a Supermassive Black Hole\n \nThrough the capture and analysis of twenty years of high-resolution imaging\, the UCLA Galactic Center Group has moved the case for a supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy from a possibility to a certainty. This was made possible with the first measurements of stellar orbits around a galactic nucleus. Further advances in state-of-the-art of high-resolution imaging technology on the world’s largest telescopes have greatly expanded the power of using stellar orbits to study black holes. This work is providing insight into how black holes grow and the role that they play in regulating the growth of their host galaxies. New measurements of stellar orbits at the Galactic Center hold the promise of improving our understanding of gravity through the tests of Einstein Theory of General Relativity in an unexplored regime. \nRSVP is by invitation only.

Traditionally\, beach and backshore dune systems have provided critical protection against high water levels and energetic waves. However\, Southern California backshores have been fundamentally altered to facilitate transportation\, housing and recreational opportunities. Sea level rise will raise beach groundwater levels and propagate wave energy landward\, promoting coastal erosion and in turn\, jeopardizing infrastructure and necessitating flood mitigation measures. And from the surprising answer\, we can draw unexpected insights about how to consciously structure our lives to make ourselves (and those around us) happier. \nJay Phelan has been on the faculty of the UCLA Life Sciences Core Program since 1997\, specializing in evolutionary biology\, human behavior\, and genetics. His work has also been featured in USA Today\, The Los Angeles Times\, MSNBC\, a TEDx talk\, and Elle magazine.
