SUMMARY:On the Road in NorCal
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Chancellor’s Society and fellow UCLA alumni\, parents\, and friends for an exclusive reception and presentation featuring special guest: \nLaura Wray-Lake \nProfessor of Social Welfare\nUCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs \nHow Young People Become Changemakers \nYoung people have abundant potential to act as positive change agents and address society’s problems locally\, nationally\, and globally. Today’s youth are rapidly reimagining what it means to be civically engaged. They have led movements from Black Lives Matter to March for our Lives to Fridays for Future\, and they create change in big and small ways to improve society and advance equity and justice. Yet\, young people do not become changemakers overnight. Professor Wray-Lake will highlight how families\, schools\, and communities support young people’s development into changemakers and how\, knowingly and unknowingly\, adults create major barriers to youth civic engagement. It is time to consider youth as leaders and how we can follow or get out of the way.

SUMMARY:On the Road in Orange County
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Chancellor’s Society and fellow UCLA alumni\, parents\, and friends for an exclusive reception and presentation featuring special guest: \nJennifer Jay \nProfessor\, Civil and Environmental Engineering\nInstitute of the Environment and Sustainability \nSTAND UP FOR THE EARTH WHILE YOU SIT DOWN TO DINNER \nHave you ever considered the connections between our food\, climate change\, and antibiotic resistance in the environment? Globally\, food systems–what we eat\, where and how we grow it– play a major role in determining our impact on the environment. By considering our food choices\, we can find “low hanging fruit” for reducing our “foodprint.” In fact\, diet shifts hold great potential for helping us mitigate climate change! In addition\, food system changes can help us address a suite of environmental challenges including biodiversity loss\, nutrient pollution\, and land use change. In this talk we will discuss the complex relationship between food and the environment. We will focus on research regarding the transport of antibiotic resistant bacteria through watersheds in California to the coastal ocean and even to the microbiome of surfers. We will also investigate how knowledge of the carbon footprint of foods can lead to healthier and more sustainable food choices.
