His work has also been featured in USA Today\, The Los Angeles Times\, MSNBC\, a TEDx talk\, and Elle magazine. SUMMARY:South Bay Chancellor's Society Cabinet Salon
DESCRIPTION:Join the South Bay UCLA Chancellor’s Society Cabinet Community and fellow UCLA alumni\, parents\, and friends for an exclusive reception and presentation featuring special guest: \nMonica L. Smith\nProfessor\, Department of Anthropology &\nInstitute of the Environment and Sustainability\nNavin and Pratima Doshi Chair in Indian Studies \nBuild Tall or Add Sprawl? An Age-Old Urban Dilemma\nIn Los Angeles\, we’re confronted with sprawl\, traffic\, and miles of roadways that connect our city. Yet an archaeological perspective on urbanism shows that even in the first cities 6\,000 years ago there were the beginnings of a tug-of-war between vertical and horizontal visions of urbanism. Ancient cities almost all have some forms of monumental architecture that concentrates people and events in built-up centers\, and they almost all have some forms of sprawl and spread that are equivalent to our modern suburbs. What can we learn from the configuration of ancient and modern cities that can help us work towards better urban centers in the future? \nRSVP is by invitation only.

SUMMARY:South Bay Chancellor's Society Event
DESCRIPTION:The South Bay Chancellor’s Society and fellow UCLA alumni\, parents and friends will gather for an exclusive reception and presentation featuring special guest: \nKerri L. Johnson\, Ph.D. \nProfessor Departments of Communication and Psychology\nChair\, Department of Communication \nJudging by First Impressions \nAs children\, we were admonished\, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” And yet\, research shows — time and time again — that we can and do. This talk will showcase how women’s appearance impacts judgments and outcomes ranging from dating to the success of politicians. Dr. Johnson will explain how research has discovered these unconscious and conscious biases through a variety of examples\, such as highly feminine female politicians receiving more campaign contributions in spite of the fact that they are judged to be low in competence. Get ready for an exciting evening exploring a timely\, rigorous\, and scholarly perspective on how and why the success of women\, in both their personal and professional lives\, is fundamentally altered by their appearance — and what we can do about it. \nRSVP for this event is by invitation only.

SUMMARY:Northern California Chancellor's Society Event
DESCRIPTION:The Northern California UCLA Chancellor’s Society and fellow alumni\, parents\, and friends will gather for an exclusive reception and presentation featuring special guest: \nWayne W.Grody\, M.D.\, Ph.D.\nProfessor\, Divisions of Medical Genetics and Molecular Diagnostics\nDirector\, Molecular Diagnostic Laboratories and Clinical Genomics Center\, UCLA School of Medicine \nDirect-to-Consumer Genetic Testing: Hype vs. Reality\nAs DNA sequencing and genotyping methodologies have become dramatically faster and cheaper\, molecular diagnostics has migrated outside of university-based medical centers. Particularly in the area of molecular genetic testing\, which can be done on noninvasive DNA samples such as saliva\, we have seen the birth of an expanding industry of internet-based\, direct-to-consumer genetic testing and ancestry companies. These entities operate with little regulatory oversight\, the results they provide are often frivolous and lack scientific evidence\, and their paradigm of anonymous testing in the absence of genetic counseling or health care provider interpretation raises profound ethical questions. This presentation will consider these questions and compare the marketing claims to the reality of the DNA information provided in this curious shadow world of personalized medicine. \nRSVP for this event is by invitation only.
