Many summers are mundane and uneventful as everyone rests from the spring and prepares for the fall. This was certainly not true of this summer at UCLA. Chancellor Block’s retirement announcement placed a series of exclamation points at the end of a summer sentence which usually ends with a period. We have the coming year to honor a man who has done so much for UCLA and to prepare for a new era of leadership.
Looking forward, we have set in motion an effort to refocus our volunteer committees. Some volunteers will be working this summer to structure our committees around three functions – holding events, collaborating with other campus organizations, and stewarding our Chancellor’s Society members. Our goal is to build more effective relationships with as many other campus organizations as possible, especially with the numerous networks of the Alumni Association. We are always receptive to new volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Lucy Tseng, Director, at email@example.com.
We also welcome a new Associate Director for the UCLA Chancellor’s Society, Jordan Hutkin-Schwartz. Jordan previously worked in development at TreePeople, a local environmental nonprofit organization. She is also a current student at UCLA Anderson School of Management. We are all looking forward to working with her.
The role of Chancellor’s Society remains important in fundraising for UCLA. Philanthropy has become and will remain a necessary component of maintaining UCLA’s status as a world class university. I so appreciate everything each of you do to support UCLA.

“Additional stress will be lifted off my and my family’s shoulders. I can join clubs, take part in research opportunities, and do summer internships without having to worry about how these activities will affect me financially. Instead, I can do what I feel will benefit me the most academically.”
Amari M. ’25 grew up in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and came to UCLA to study environmental science and engineering. She is passionate about helping disadvantaged populations around the globe who have been negatively affected by climate change. Amari hopes to one day be a part of the solution to the growing threat of global climate change by working in environmental research, policy, or engineering for our national government. In order to reach her goals, she plans on obtaining a Masters or PhD in environmental science. As a scholarship recipient, Amari will graduate from UCLA debt-free. She shared, “Additional stress will be lifted off my and my family’s shoulders. I can join clubs, take part in research opportunities, and do summer internships without having to worry about how these activities will affect me financially. Instead, I can do what I feel will benefit me the most academically,” when asked about the impact of receiving scholarship support from UCLA. Outside of the classroom, she is currently participating in the Be Green Bruin Club, Environmental Student Network, National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), and the Afrikan Student Union. Amari’s time at UCLA has given her access to opportunities that will help shape her career path and allow her to explore the possibilities of her future without limitations.
